Troubleshooting

Having problems with any of our digital resources? Please read the following troubleshooting guide to see if your problem has a known solution.

The English Parish Church through the Centuries

'The English Parish Church through the Centuries' resource does not require any form of internet browser or other supporting software - it is a self-encapsulated program that will run independently on both Mac and Windows PC computers. The resource can be run directly from the DVD-ROM, or (for better performance) from your computer's hard-disk.

Note: We have found that some anti-virus applications may attempt to scan the English Parish Church DVD-ROM for viruses when the disc is first inserted. This can increase the initial loading time significantly, and it may appear that nothing is happening. If the DVD drive light is on/flashing and the drive is making noise, it is likely that the disc is being scanned or is being loaded - but please be patient, this may take several minutes. The DVD-ROM files will become visible in Windows Explorer (Windows Key + 'E') after scanning/loading is complete. If very long loading times are encountered, try removing the disc from the DVD drive and re-inserting. To avoid waiting for lengthy loading times to complete, Windows users can click the 'Install_ParishChurch.exe' file to install the program to their hard-drive (see below for more details). Mac users can simply copy the DVD-ROM files to their computer.

Running the resource from the DVD-ROM

Insert the DVD-ROM into your computer's DVD drive. On Mac computers, the software should appear on the desktop as 'Parish Church' - simply click this icon and run the software using the 'Launch_ParishChurch' application. On Windows PCs, navigate to your DVD drive (using 'Windows Explorer' or your preferred method) and run the software using the 'Launch_ParishChurch.exe' file.

Running the resource from your computer

For better performance (including smoother video playback and more responsive interface elements), you can copy the resource to your computer's hard disk and run it from there. Insert the DVD-ROM into your computer's DVD drive and navigate to the drive to view the files. PC users can use the 'Install_ParishChurch.exe'*** file to automatically install the resource onto their computer.

*** The install file on very early versions of the DVD-ROM might be named 'The English Parish Church.exe'.

Mac users can create a folder on their computer's hard disk and copy all the files from the DVD-ROM to that folder. Use the 'Launch_ParishChurch' application to open the resource.

Images of Salvation, 3rd Edition

'Images of Salvation' does not require any form of internet browser or other supporting software - it is a self-encapsulated program that will run independently on both Mac and Windows PC computers. The resource can be run directly from the CD-ROM, or (for better performance) from your computer's hard-disk.

Running the resource from the CD-ROM

Insert the CD-ROM into your computer's CD drive. On Mac computers, the resource icon should appear on the desktop - simply click this icon and run the software using the 'Launch_IoS' application. On Windows PCs, navigate to your CD drive (using 'Windows Explorer' or your preferred method) and run the software using the 'Launch_IoS.exe' file.

Running the resource from your computer

For better performance (eg. more responsive interface elements), you can copy the resource to your computer's hard disk and run it from there. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer's CD drive and navigate to the drive to view the files. PC users can use the 'Install_IoS.exe'*** file to automatically install the resource onto their computer.

Known Issues

  1. 'Save image' facility. An issue with the 'Save Image' facility has been noted. This facility allows users to save a copy of an image directly from the resource, but in early version of 'Images of Salvation no file-save dialog box appears. This issue can be fixed by downloading and installing a patch over an installed copy of Images of Salvation:

For patch instructions, see the README.txt file packaged with the patch.

Image files can also be accessed directly in the 'images' folder of the resource. The folder can be accessed via the main directory on the CD-ROM, or via the local folder on the user's computer into which the resource was copied/installed. For further clarification, please contact us.

Opening and Running 'Pilgrims and Pilgrimage' or 'Images of Salvation'

NOTE: The 3rd edition of Images of Salvation is not reliant on an internet browser, and will thus be free of any the browser-related issues outlined below.

Unfortunately, many problems regarding the opening and loading of the CD-ROM are due to changes in browser (such as Internet Explorer) and operating system (such as Windows) software and are beyond our control. However, most problems are easily solved with the tips described below.

Opening/Running the CD-ROM via 'Autorun'

Applies to: Images of Salvation | Pilgrims and Pilgrimage

Both Images of Salvation and Pilgrims and Pilgrimage CD-ROMs contain an 'autorun' facility that will automatically load the CD once it has been placed in the computer's CD drive. However, changes to the security present in both browser and operating system software prohibit the automatic opening of some types of files from a CD-ROM. Therefore, recent computers, or those computers that have received recent upgrades to operating system or browser software, may not load the CD automatically. CD-ROMs can be opened manually - see below.

  2. If unsuccessful, navigate to the 'pilgrimage' directory, located in the root directory of your cd, and open the 'welcome.htm' file.
